International Relations and Partners of IWR

Publication spread 2009.

IWR and its affiliated organizations and programs are strongly encouraged to build and maintain close scientific relations in the international scientific community. The successful fundamental research work documented in multiple awards has encouraged various regional, national and international joint projects and is the basis of IWR's enormous scientific reputation. IWR is eager to strengthen its cooperations with industry as well as other universities and scientific institutions. While the latter creates strong synergy effects between the scientists of the various institutions, collaborations with industry bring challenging applications from practical queries into IWR's research program and improve thereby the development of new mathematical and computational methods. Here are some examples of our international activities.

Conferences, workshops and scientific exchange

IWR regularily hosts international guests and friends.

The international relations of IWR support notably the large graduate and post-graduate programs, which run under the umbrella of the center. We have established, for example, a joint PhD program (Cotutelle) with the Charles University Prague. Since 1992 every year "Heidelberg-Prague-Workshops" are being organized within the framework of this program. Please visit the websites of these international Graduate Colleges for more information.

Summer schools

Summer schools in Heidelberg and abroad are organized to foster the exchange of scientists during different steps of their career by offering the possiblity for direct contacts, and for the recruitment of highly talented candidates for the graduate school HGS MathComp. Furthermore, the summer schools are an important part of the cooperation with universities and research institutions in countries in south-east Asia:

  • Spring School on Multiscale Methods & Modeling in Biophysics and Systems Biology, Tongji University, Shanghai
  • Summer School on Flow and Transport in Terrestrial Systems, Heidelberg
  • Summer School on Probabilistic Graphical Models: From Biological Networks to Image Analysis, Jiao Tong University, Shanghai
  • Summer School on Modeling and Simulation in the Life Sciences, Heidelberg  (upcoming next)

A common vision

IWR and its partners share the common vision of working towards an international interdisciplinary research network on modeling, simulation and optimization in scientific computing that can serve as a common umbrella. The center is involved in about 150 partnerships with foreign universities and research institutes.

Furthermore, IWR is especially interested in intensifying its successful collaborations with scientists and research institutions from countries in South-East Asia in the area of scientific computing and computational sciences. For this purpose the IWR has signed several MOUs (Memoranda of Understanding) with renowned institutes and universities.
